National NAIDOC Caring for Country and Culture Award Category
Dr Theoni Whyman (Tia)

The National NAIDOC Committee are excited to announce Theoni (Tia) Whyman as a finalist in the Caring for Country and Culture award.

Tia is a Barkindji woman and a Monash University graduate with a PhD in psychology. Her thesis focused on lateral violence, inspired by the experiences of her community Elders. Throughout her research journey, Tia faced challenges such as domestic violence and concussions from sports injuries but found solace in the healing practice of weaving, leading her to establish "Weaving as Medicine."

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Telethon Kid’s Institute in Perth, she contributes to studies benefiting Indigenous children and families and social and emotional wellbeing. Tia’s dedication to increasing awareness of cultural practices and the effects of lateral violence is commendable. She is a pillar of strength and resilience, representing the values of NAIDOC through her commitment to community empowerment.

Despite facing obstacles, Tia continues to pursue her research and honour her cultural heritage through tangible practices that promote healing and growth. Her work exemplifies excellence and perseverance in the face of adversity, making her a shining example of cultural leadership and resilience.

Welcome to NAIDOC.
