Our Yarning – mirror books for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
Creating a library of 500 books in five years with all stories written by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for their children. Join Library For All’s Cultural Advisor, Dr Julie Owen to hear about the Our Yarning collection. An ambitious project to create a library of 500 books in five years with all stories written by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for their children, with all e-books free to access. We know the importance of having role models who share country, culture, values and strong community connections, that make positive impacts on children. And children’s books are the same. We are much more likely to engage with a story if the characters reflect our lived experiences. This is what the Our Yarning collection is aiming to achieve, books for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids that celebrate and share their lives and stories. Hear about how you and your stories can be part of the Our Yarning collection, and how you and your kids can access the digital books for free. Presentation will be led by Library For All’s Cultural Advisor Dr Julie Owen, a Nurrunga /Ngarrindjeri woman from South Australia living in Broome with experience in health, education and community development across the top end for over 30 years.
