"Because of my wife, the mother to our 8 children, I can!"


Ben Mitchell from the Meriam and Mualgal peoples of the Eastern and Western Torres Straits, and National NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair gives a moving tribute to his wife of 21 years Marcia Salam. “The trials she’s been through, with Ovarian Cancer and losing our last child. To go through that and raise the rest of our 7 children, she is an inspiration to me. Because of what she is, and who she is I am able to do everything that I can in my life because of her.”

2017 NAIDOC Week theme announced - Our Languages Matter

The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Welcome to NAIDOC.

We acknowledge all First Peoples of the beautiful lands on which we live and celebrate their enduring knowledge and connections to Country. We honour the wisdom of and pay respect to Elders past and present.
